Frequently Asked Questions
Pediatricians complete a 3-year residency after completion of medical school. All of their residency training focuses on the care of children from newborn through their teenage years. Family doctors also complete 3-year residency programs, but they must also learn to care for adults of all ages. After residency, Pediatricians see 100% children as patients, while Family doctors typically see about 90% adults and only 10% children in their patient visits. Pediatricians therefore have more in-depth training in the care of children, and rapidly gain experience caring for children compared to a Family doctor.
We accept as many plans as possible to try and care for every child in our community. However, insurance plans are always changing based on negotiations between insurance carriers and healthcare networks. You can check whether your plan is accepted by the Children’s Mercy Health Network.
We offer a cash price list that includes the cost of a visit and any additional in-office testing that may be recommended. You can request an emailed copy of this list by contacting the office.
No, however, we highly recommend immunizing according to the standard North American schedule and firmly believe in the safety and effectiveness of immunizations. That being said, we recognize the ultimate decision-making rights for a child inherently belong with the parents or primary caregivers. We will treat every patient as an individual and with both dignity and respect. We will honor the doctor-patient relationship even during situations where there is disagreement, and work within that close and trusting relationship to do the best thing possible for your child. Please hear us: we firmly believe that every child who is able should be vaccinated. It is our goal to educate families as to the safety and benefits of immunizing on schedule. However, we do not believe that issuing an ultimatum or ending the doctor-patient relationship over immunization status is beneficial to our patients or the community.

At Redwood, patients can see the provider of their choice whenever possible. Walk-in clinic is first-come-first-served and staffed by both doctors and nurse practitioners, so you may see either depending on availability. Regardless of their educational path, all Redwood providers give top-notch Pediatric specialty care! All of our nurse practitioners are specialty trained and certified in pediatrics. As a group, Redwood works hard to ensure high quality, consistent care among all providers.
Newborn – high school graduation (Approximate age 18). At that point, we recommend that our older patients develop a relationship with another provider who can care for them throughout their adult years.
Wellness checks according to Healthy Children recommendations, same day sick visits, mental health (adhd, anxiety, and depression) concerns, wart removal, laceration repair (stitches, skin staples, skin glue/steri-strips), procedures such as circumcisions and tongue-tie repair, orthopedic care for simple fractures and dislocations, and chronic disease management… just to name a few!
Redwood providers are on call for our patients 24/7/365. Outside of office hours, you can speak directly with a Redwood provider over the phone, free of charge. Providers will assist the parent on deciding if a child can wait until regular business hours or needs to be seen at an urgent care or ER.
Yes! Redwood has daily walk-in hours between 7:45am-8:30am at all locations. If it’s been a rough night and you need to make a plan before the day gets going at work, school, or daycare, Redwood’s walk-in clinic is just the place for you! We will give quick, targeted care to diagnose the problem and get you on your way with the best plan for your sick child.
Redwood has been designed from the top down with cleanliness in mind. This is always on our minds because children tend to be messy, especially when they are sick. All Redwood locations have separate waiting rooms for sick and well children. Our staff follow the highest professional standards of handwashing, room cleaning, and airflow technology procedures between patients to minimize disease transmission. Parents of particularly vulnerable children may request to go directly to a room and bypass the waiting room, or choose to wait in their car if there is no empty room available. We will do whatever it takes to make you feel confident that your child will remain safe and unexposed to the germs of others. With our cleanliness protocols, a child is much more likely to catch an illness from a family member or quick visit to the grocery store than from a visit to our office.
Timing is important, especially when kids aren’t doing well! New patients can make an appointment to address a specific concern same day or same week, depending on the severity of the concern. Well check appointment availability for new patients depends on the time of year and is typically less than 3 weeks. Redwood works hard to provide an adequate number of same day sick visits so that all patients who need an appointment are able to be seen in a timely manner.
A true emergency should always result in activation of emergency services by calling 911. If you aren’t sure if the problem is an emergency, call our office and speak to the Triage Nurse during office hours, and the on-call provider after hours. With Redwood you will never be alone in making decisions to help your child during a difficult time.
We request 24 hours notice if you will miss an appointment, but ask that you still notify us as soon as you know you will be late or miss an appointment on the day of the appointment. We understand that situations sometimes arise that are out of a parent’s control and do not punish an occasional mishap.
We offer breastfeeding support classes twice a month.
